Month by month
Mana Pools in April
April is the quiet reopening. Rain all but stops at 5 mm on the thirty-year average, the soil firms under 31.2°C days, and the first camps unlock while the bush is still tall, green and loud with birds.
If you only want the answer
April is when Mana Pools reopens, and it is the birder's month: summer migrants in an open park. Expect dispersed game, thick vegetation, low-season prices and very few other vehicles.
A park still catching its breath
Do not arrive expecting the postcard. The herds are still spread through the inland bush where the rains left them, the grass stands high, and game viewing is honest work rather than a procession. Nights at 20.9°C are the mildest of any open month.
The compensation is feathered. ZimParks credits the park with 380 bird species, and April is the single month when the November-to-April migrants overlap with roads you can actually use. Bring the binoculars to Long Pool and the floodplain fringe before the visitors leave for the north.
What is actually open
The 1 April openers are Kavinga, on its concession at the southern edge, and Zambezi Expeditions on the riverbank. The Wilderness trio of Ruckomechi, Little Ruckomechi and Chikwenya, plus the two Nyamatusi camps and Kanga at its inland pan, come online through the month. Vundu, Little Vundu, John's Camp and Mana River Camp all wait for May.
Nyamepi and the ZimParks lodges open with the season too, roughly from the start of the month. For self-drivers the caveat is the road: an early April descent after a wet March is a gamble, so confirm conditions at Marongora before you commit the vehicle.
Walking, paddling and the booking angle
Your walking permit is valid, but tall grass makes unguided floodplain walking a poorer idea than in the open months; take the ranger option at $12 per person per hour if you walk at all. Canoeing is the April activity, with the river full and the banks green.
April is also the one Mana Pools month you can book late, sometimes weeks out. Use the freedom, and put your long-lead energy into the dry-season dates instead.
