Flying to Mana Pools: airstrips, charters, who should fly

Mana Pools has a working network of dirt airstrips, daily seat charters from Harare and Kariba, and a private-camp industry built around them. It also has a self-drive culture that flying cannot serve at all. Here is what actually flies as of 12 September 2026, what it costs you in luggage, and an honest answer on whether you should be on the plane.

If you only want the answer

If you are booked into a private camp, fly: seat charters run daily from Harare, about 1 hour 35 minutes to the valley, and from Kariba in about 30 minutes, landing at Mana Main or your camp's own strip, where your camp's vehicle meets you. If you are self-driving to Nyamepi with camping gear, drive: no vehicle waits at the airstrip, ZimParks rents nothing, and camping at Nyamepi without your own 4x4 simply does not work. The dividing line is not budget, it is whether a camp with vehicles is expecting you on the other end.

The airstrips, camp by camp

Every strip at Mana Pools is dirt, every one becomes unusable once the rains set in around November, and none of them is an airport: no terminal, no fuel, no taxi rank, just a cleared line in the bush and a camp vehicle waiting if one has been arranged. Mana Main is the principal strip, on the central floodplain near park headquarters, and it serves the whole cluster of camps in the middle of the park.

The rest of the network follows the concessions. Mana West serves the Ruckomechi concession in the west, 20 to 30 minutes from the Wilderness camps. Dandawa serves Kanga Expeditions in the interior, about 20 minutes from camp. Chikwenya, at the eastern end, is light-aircraft access only. Kavinga, on the southern boundary, has its own strip 10 minutes from camp, and Tembo Plains uses the Sapi Reserve strip east of the park. The one place you cannot fly to is Chitake Springs: it has no airstrip at all and is strictly 4WD access.

The charter reality from Harare and Kariba

There is no scheduled airline service into Mana Pools, and as of 12 September 2026 we could find none planned. What exists instead is a seat-charter system that works well in season. Safari Logistics publishes a daily scheduled charter network, checked 12 September 2026, with a 14:30 Harare departure reaching Mana Pools at 16:05, a return leaving Mana at 07:30 via Bumi Hills, and a Kariba or Matusadona connection of about 30 minutes; flights operate with a minimum of two passengers and the schedule flexes with bookings, weather and airstrip condition. The Kariba link matters because it lets you stitch Mana into a Kariba or Matusadona itinerary without ever touching the escarpment road.

For private charters, Executive Air has operated from Hangar 17 at Charles Prince Airport outside Harare for close to fifty years and lists Mana Pools among its bush destinations, flying light aircraft suited to dirt strips. Altair Charters is also based at Charles Prince and has flown Zimbabwe's safari circuit for over twenty-five years, though as of 12 September 2026 we could not verify a published route list, so treat it as a quote request rather than a timetable. Mack Air, better known in Botswana, also links Hwange, Mana Pools and Matusadona.

On price, nobody publishes numbers and we will not invent them. Seat rates are quoted on request from Safari Logistics, and private charters are priced per aircraft for the whole return flight, so the plane costs the same whether one of you flies or five. Most fly-in guests never see the flight priced separately at all: the camps and agents package it into the stay. When you compare a fly-in package against a self-drive trip, remember the park's own fees apply however you arrive, 24 dollars per person per day for international visitors on the February 2026 tariff, and check whether your camp's rate includes them.

Luggage: the soft-bag rule

Light aircraft weigh everything, including you. The published rules below are Safari Logistics' terms, checked 12 September 2026, and every operator flying these strips applies something close to them, so pack to this standard whoever carries you.

  • Maximum 20 kg per person, and that total includes your hand luggage
  • Soft-sided bags only, no wheels, no frames; arrive with a suitcase and you will be repacking into a soft bag at your own expense, with the suitcase left behind or freighted at extra cost
  • Bag dimensions around 25 cm wide by 30 cm high by 62 cm long
  • Passenger weights are required before travel, and passengers over 120 kg may need to buy a second seat
  • An extra seat can be bought to carry up to 80 kg of additional luggage, which is how photographers get long lenses in
  • Check in at least 30 minutes before departure; late arrivals can lose their seat

The honest comparison: fly or drive

Flying removes the two hard parts of getting to Mana Pools: the six to seven hour drive from Harare and, above all, the escarpment descent followed by about 74 km of corrugated gravel. That is exactly why the private-camp trade flies; at least one major specialist agent arranges all its Mana trips as fly-in and names the escarpment road as the reason. From the air the whole approach becomes ninety-odd minutes over the Zambezi Valley, and your camp handles everything from the strip onwards.

But flying also removes your vehicle, and Mana Pools without a vehicle only works if someone else supplies one. Nyamepi is a self-catering campsite where you bring every scrap of food, water and equipment, sites are sold whole for up to six people, and the only thing for sale in the entire park is firewood at reception. Land at Mana Main with a tent and no 4x4 and you have no way to carry supplies, no way to reach your site, and no way to move in a park where walking without a guide requires a permit and camps are unfenced. ZimParks rents no vehicles and runs no transfers. It does not work, so do not build a plan around it.

The short-trip arithmetic favours flying more than most people expect. Drive, and you spend the best part of two days on the road for a three-night stay; fly, and those days become game-viewing days. But the same arithmetic assumes a camp with vehicles, guides and full board at the other end. If your Mana Pools is a riverfront site at Nyamepi with your own fridge and braai, the drive is not a cost, it is the price of the version of the park you came for.

  • Private-camp guests: fly. The seat charters and camp transfers are the designed route, and the escarpment road adds nothing to your trip.
  • Short trips of two to four nights at a catered camp: fly, the arithmetic is clear.
  • Self-drive campers bound for Nyamepi, Mucheni or the exclusive sites: drive. Camping without your own vehicle does not work here.
  • Chitake Springs: drive regardless, there is no airstrip and access is strictly 4WD.
  • Combining Mana with Kariba or Matusadona without a vehicle: fly the Kariba link, about 30 minutes.
  • November onwards: have a fallback either way, because rain closes the dirt strips and the gravel road alike.
