By December the valley has taken itself back. The storms arrive in earnest at 127 mm across 13 rain days on the average, the last camp locks up on the tenth, and Mana Pools goes largely unwatched until autumn.
If you only want the answer
Mana Pools is effectively closed in December. Kavinga, on its private concession at the southern boundary, trades until 10 December; after that there is nothing to book inside or beside the park until April.
The last open door
Kavinga's season runs from 1 April to 10 December, the longest in the area, and its cliff-top position above the upper Ruckomechi riverbed sits on concession ground where night drives are legal. A first-week-of-December stay there is the only Mana-adjacent trip this month offers, and even it depends on the access holding.
Everything else is gone: the ZimParks camps shut in November, and the floodplain operators have trucked their tents out. Treat any itinerary that sells you mid-December Mana Pools with suspicion.
What the rain is doing while the gates rust
Days hold at 31.5°C with nights of 22.8°C, and the storms rebuild the system: the pools rise, the herds walk inland to the fresh growth, and the black-cotton roads begin the annual failure that constitutes the closure. No date is gazetted for any of this; the rain writes the rules, and ZimParks simply declines to argue.
