How long, which camps, which route
Mana Pools safari itineraries: 3, 5 and 7 nights, with Lower Zambezi and Victoria Falls
Three nights is the minimum that makes Mana Pools worth the journey, five lets you add a second area, and a week lets you cross the river to Zambia or fly on to Lake Kariba and Victoria Falls. Here are the plans day by day, with real flight times and rough costs.
Updated 23 October 2026
The short answer
Plan on at least three nights if you fly in and four or five if you drive, because the road from Harare takes six to seven hours each way. Five nights split between a river camp and an inland camp such as Kanga Pan or Chitake shows both sides of the park. The natural longer trips are Mana plus Lower Zambezi across the river, or Victoria Falls, Mana and Lake Kariba linked by daily seat charters. As a rough guide for 2027, three fly-in nights at a camp with published rates cost about $3,360 to $4,750 per person before flights, and three self-drive nights camping cost about $810 for two people.

How many days do you need in Mana Pools?
Three nights is the working minimum. Mana is a park you experience on foot and in a canoe, and each of those takes a morning or an afternoon. With three nights you get two full days: enough for two walks, a canoe outing and a couple of drives on the floodplain. Fewer than that and the travel outweighs the time on the ground.
If you drive, add a night. The road from Harare is 384 km and takes six to seven hours, with a compulsory stop at Marongora, so arrival and departure days are mostly road. Mana also bills entry per day, so three nights already costs four fee-days.
Five nights is the length we would choose. It lets you split between the river and an inland water point, or between the central floodplain and a concession where night drives are allowed. Seven nights or more makes sense when you combine Mana with a second park, since getting to the Zambezi Valley at all is the expensive part.
How you travel: fly-in or self-drive
Fly-in is how almost all private-camp guests arrive. Safari Logistics runs daily seat charters, with a minimum of two passengers: Harare 14:30 to Mana Pools 16:05, and Mana Pools 07:30 back to Harare at 10:10 via Bumi Hills on Lake Kariba (timetable checked 23 Oct 2026). Your camp meets you at the airstrip. Luggage is limited to about 20 kg in a soft bag, and seat prices are quoted on request, usually as part of your camp booking.
Self-drive needs a high-clearance 4x4 and full self-sufficiency: there is no fuel, shop or water for sale inside the park, so you fill up at Karoi, 177 km before Nyamepi. Self-driving only works with ZimParks accommodation or your own camping gear. Our getting there and flying in pages cover the route and the airstrips.
Three nights fly-in: the classic floodplain stay
One camp on the central floodplain or the western concession. Suits a first visit, or a Mana stop inside a longer Zimbabwe or Zambia trip. A good fit is Wilderness Ruckomechi or Nyamatusi Camp for full comfort, or Zambezi Expeditions or Mana River Camp for a simpler tented camp.
- Day 1Seat charter from Harare at 14:30, landing at Mana Pools at 16:05. Camp vehicle to camp, late-afternoon drive or sundowner on the river.
- Day 2Early walk on the floodplain with a professional guide. Afternoon canoe outing past hippo pods, or a drive along the river.
- Day 3Morning drive to look for lion and wild dog. Afternoon walk to the winterthorn groves where elephant bulls stand for pods (best September to October).
- Day 4Early activity, then the 07:30 charter to Harare via Bumi Hills, landing at 10:10, in time for an afternoon international departure.
Rough cost, 2027: about $3,360 to $4,750 per person sharing at Wilderness Ruckomechi (3 nights at $1,119 in April and May, or $1,583 from June), with meals, activities and park fees included. Flights are extra and quoted on request. Estimate based on the operator's published rates, checked 23 Oct 2026.

Three nights self-drive: Nyamepi or a ZimParks lodge
The do-it-yourself Mana, and the cheapest serious safari in the region. You need your own 4x4 and camping or cooking kit, and a ZimParks booking made months ahead.
- Day 1Leave Harare early. Fuel and food at Karoi, check in and pay fees at Marongora on the escarpment, then about 74 km of gravel to Nyamepi. Six to seven hours in all.
- Day 2Collect a walking permit at the park office or book a ZimParks ranger at $12 per person per hour. Walk in the morning, drive the floodplain loops in the afternoon, back in camp by 18:00 (May to July) or 18:30 (August to October).
- Day 3A full day on the floodplain, or a canoe outing booked in advance with an operator.
- Day 4Early drive, pack up, and the same road back to Harare with your receipts ready for the exit gate.
Rough cost, 2026: about $810 for two people camping at Nyamepi, or about $915 in a Hippo, Nyati or Muvee lodge, covering accommodation, four fee-days of entry, vehicle fees and diesel from Harare. Food, guiding and the vehicle itself are extra. Estimate from our costs page.
Five nights fly-in: the river and an inland water point
Two camps, two landscapes. Mana's river camps give you walking and canoeing; the inland camps give you game that has to come to the only water left. The classic pairing in our lodge research is Kanga Expeditions with a river camp, and because African Bush Camps runs Kanga Expeditions, Nyamatusi Camp and Zambezi Expeditions, it can arrange the transfer between them as one booking.
- Day 1Fly from Harare to Mana Pools, transfer to a river camp such as Zambezi Expeditions or Nyamatusi Camp.
- Days 2 to 3Walking, canoeing and floodplain drives from the river camp.
- Day 4Transfer inland to Kanga Expeditions, using Dandawa airstrip 20 minutes from camp. Afternoon in the hide below the deck.
- Day 5A day at the pan: walk in the morning, sit by the water in the afternoon heat as elephant and buffalo come in to drink.
- Day 6Fly out from Dandawa or Mana Main; your camp confirms which strip and time.
Rough cost: these camps publish no rates, so ask for a package quote. A five-night alternative with published rates is 2 nights at Wilderness Ruckomechi and 3 at Wilderness Chikwenya: about $5,960 to $8,490 per person sharing in 2027, park fees included, before flights. Estimate based on Wilderness rates checked 23 Oct 2026; the charter between the two ends of the park is extra.
Five nights self-drive: floodplain plus Chitake Springs
For experienced self-drivers. Chitake is the most intense wildlife site in Zimbabwe in the late dry season and has no facilities of any kind, so you carry in all your water. Most people walk there with a professional guide, which we recommend.
- Day 1Harare to Nyamepi via Karoi and Marongora, six to seven hours.
- Days 2 to 3Floodplain walks and drives, staying at Nyamepi or a Mucheni exclusive campsite.
- Day 4Drive back towards Nyakasikana Gate, where you check in for Chitake and buy the walking permit, then 4WD to your Chitake site.
- Day 5Walk and sit at the spring. Stay at your site after dark and keep a fire going; predators move through.
- Day 6Out via Nyakasikana and Marongora to Harare.
Rough cost, 2026: about $1,400 for two people, based on 3 nights at a $120 Nyamepi site, 2 nights at a $235 Chitake site, six fee-days of entry at $24 each, vehicle fees and about $250 of diesel. A guide and food are extra. Our estimate from the February 2026 tariff.
Seven nights: Mana Pools and Lower Zambezi, both banks of the river
Lower Zambezi National Park is directly across the river in Zambia, and a week split between the two banks gives you Mana's walking and Zambia's boats, night drives and better leopard odds. Transfers between the two go by air or by road via the Chirundu border post; motorboats are banned inside Mana Pools, so ask your camp which option it arranges. The western Ruckomechi concession is the nearer end of Mana to Chirundu. Compare the two parks in detail on our Mana Pools or Lower Zambezi page and our Lower Zambezi guide.
- Day 1Fly from Harare to Mana Pools on a charter your camp arranges; Wilderness Ruckomechi uses Mana West airstrip, 20 to 30 minutes from camp.
- Days 2 to 4Walking, day drives, night drives and boating on the concession.
- Day 5Transfer by air or road via Chirundu and the border to a camp in the Chiawa area of Lower Zambezi, such as Time + Tide Chongwe Camp or Royal Zambezi Lodge.
- Days 6 to 7Canoeing, boat game viewing and drives into Lower Zambezi National Park.
- Day 8Light aircraft from the Royal or Jeki airstrip to Lusaka, about 35 minutes on Proflight's Jeki shuttle (1 May to 15 November), or about five hours by road, for your international flight.
Rough cost, 2027: about $7,200 to $9,600 per person sharing, based on 4 nights at Wilderness Ruckomechi ($1,119 to $1,583 a night, park fees included) and 3 at Time + Tide Chongwe Camp ($810 to $990 plus $100 a night in park fees). Flights, the border transfer and visas are extra. Estimate from published rates in our two guides.
Seven to nine nights: Victoria Falls, Mana Pools and Lake Kariba
The Safari Logistics seat-charter circuit joins Victoria Falls, Hwange, Bumi Hills on Lake Kariba and Mana Pools every day, so you can link all three without driving. From Victoria Falls, the 12:30 flight goes via Hwange to Bumi Hills at 14:40 and continues at 15:00 to Mana Pools, landing at 16:20. From Mana, the 07:30 flight reaches Bumi Hills at 08:45, and the 09:00 from Bumi Hills reaches Victoria Falls at 11:30 via Hwange (timetable checked 23 Oct 2026). Lake Kariba adds boat-based game viewing on the Matusadona shore, which Mana cannot offer. More on the lake on our Matusadona guide, and on the Falls on our Victoria Falls page.
- Days 1 to 2Victoria Falls. See the Falls, sleep two nights in town.
- Day 312:30 seat charter from Victoria Falls, arriving Mana Pools 16:20.
- Days 4 to 6Walking, canoeing and drives at a Mana camp.
- Day 707:30 charter to Bumi Hills, arriving 08:45. Bumi Hills Safari Lodge looks over the lake, with boat outings to the Matusadona shoreline.
- Days 8 to 9Boat cruises, fishing and game viewing along the lake.
- Day 10Fly from Bumi Hills to Harare (arriving 10:10) or to Victoria Falls (arriving 11:30) for your flight home.
Rough cost, 2027: about $7,200 to $10,800 per person sharing for the seven safari nights, based on 4 nights at Wilderness Ruckomechi ($1,119 to $1,583) and 3 at Bumi Hills Safari Lodge ($910 to $1,490, agent price list). Victoria Falls hotel nights, charters and any park or conservation fees not in the lodge rate are extra. Estimate only. For a cheaper lake stay, Changa Safari Camp publishes $567 to $682 per person in April to October.

When to go, and which months to avoid
Every route here is a dry-season plan. Mana Pools is closed in practice from December to March, when the black-cotton roads and dirt airstrips stop working, and most camps open in April or May and close in mid-November. July to October is the peak for walking and game, September is the best all-round month, and October brings the most game and 40°C heat on the valley floor.
April, May and early November are the value months: the Wilderness camps cost about 30 percent less in April and May, at the price of more dispersed game. In November the first rains can close airstrips without warning, so keep a fallback. Our best time to visit page goes month by month.
Practical notes for any Mana itinerary
Nobody under 16 may walk in Zimbabwe's national parks, and most private camps set a minimum age of 12 or 16, so families should plan around Nyamatusi Mahogany or a ZimParks lodge. Malaria risk is high all year in the Zambezi Valley and tsetse flies are present; see our health and malaria page.
Bring US dollars in small notes for park fees, firewood and tips; card machines at Marongora and Nyamepi are unreliable. If you want to compare Mana with other parks before you settle on a route, compare parks puts them side by side, and our Hwange guide covers the most common Zimbabwe pairing by road.
